I’ve been thinking about houses the past few days. Why we choose the ones we do. How we decide the”right”one for our family or possible future family. How we determine what spaces are the most important and what we must have; like the best kitchen or bathroom, etc.
Having owned a few homes, lived in apartments and now rent a house, I have a lot of experience in this area. Since I’ve been divorced I’ve lived in at least 9 different places. All in the same area. Almost all different sizes.
I have often voiced the thought of how having a smaller home helps love grow. In a home that’s large with lots of options to escape each other perhaps you don’t work things out as readily as a small home requires. So I find I like living in a space that is smaller but open, that requires us to work through issues quickly. It’s challenging to hide your feelings when you have no where to escape to. Even when the space becomes crowded I would still choose our smaller home to the big homes I’ve had in the past.
It’s cozy and warm. It’s open and bright. And our family and friends feel welcome. The size of the home isn’t what matters but what you fill it up with. Who more importantly. I’m hopeful the houses I’ve resided in raise up children who feel loved and ready to explore the world. That my partner feels encouraged and supported in his endeavors and that we thrive as a team.
The house you prefer will look different than mine. And my needs for what my home provides will change. For now these rooms are filled with what we need in this season. I believe love and harmony grow best when relationships are watered and fed. When we communicate and listen with each other. And I find that no matter what your house looks like, it is the folks that you live with that create the home.

It’s quiet and all through my house those who are here are sleeping quiet as a mouse. I have coffee in hand, tree lights on and Christmas music playing. It’s a beautiful calm this morning.
This year we chose to stay home with whichever children could be here and enjoy a quiet day. It’s been an overwhelming stressful few months and having a calmer holiday seemed just the right thing. Sitting here this morning, enjoying my home in peaceful stillness I know we made the right decision.
Holidays can bring many expectations. And often we can be disappointed when these may not be met. They can be loud, chaotic and lots of fun. But also stressful and frantic. This morning as I start this day I am reminded what this is all about. Family. Love. Togetherness.
I am choosing to be joyful rather than stressed. I chose to enjoy the moments rather than expect them to be something in particular. We get to choose our mindset and I hope you chose love and joy today as you celebrate this holiday. I hope you focus on why we celebrate and what that means to you and yours.
As other family members are off to gather together I am grateful for those asleep in their beds above me right now. Grateful I get another day to enjoy this beautiful crazy life. Thankful for quiet moments to reflect and set my intentions for the day.
Even though this year is different than ever before, it’s still a great day. It’s still a day to celebrate. It’s still a beautiful day even as it changes and brings new moments.

It’s a cold dreary day here in the Northwest. I am definitely thankful I work inside. Days like today are tough to be working all day outside; I commend those that can. Just like the grey sky; my mood has been a bit grey the past few days. Some of my mood is due to life stresses that we all experience from time to time. But some of it is that I am just cranky. Sometimes we are all that way; when we wished we had just stayed in bed and not had to do anything. But like many of you, I have a family and a job so I have to pull myself out of bed and get on with it. This week has been a challenge in wanting to do that.
In recognizing that I need to change my attitude I thought I would share with you what I have been doing this week to work on that.
Here are a few tips I try:
- I tend to chat by text with my partner. He is a great listener and just lets me be. If I am spun up over something kind of silly and inconsequential, he just reads it and says he is there for me. This kind of support is often enough to make me feel heard and calmer.
- I take a walk. Sometimes this can be hard to do during a busy day but I think it is vital especially when trying to not vent all your frustrations to your coworkers. Just take 10 min and walk around the building. Go get some water. Sometimes the quick walk just clears my head enough for me to feel I can go back to my desk more focused.
- Listen to music. Or a podcast. Or an audio book. Sometimes when I am having a not so good day, I will just put on my headset, find some music I like and allow the music to soothe me some. Or I will listen to podcasts from different blogs I follow. Having to concentrate a bit on what they are speaking about can be enough to change my thoughts. Gives me something else to focus on.
These are things I’ve been trying this week as my attitude has been a bit gloomy and grumpy like our weather. Changing your thoughts is work. Staying positive sometimes requires some extra effort. But it’s always worth it. No one really wants to be around someone who is crabbing at them, especially when our bad mood isn’t anyone else’s fault. We are responsible for our own thoughts and actions.
It is not always easy to pull yourself out of a bad mood. What do you try?
Do you practice gratitude moments? Not for the month of November. But in general, do you think about anything or everything you are thankful for?
I’m learning to get back into this practice with my morning routine. Writing down at least three things I’m grateful for each day. Sometimes these are simple things I easily take for granted. Other things are bigger than myself and my little world.
I’m finding this practice keeps me calmer and staying in a positive place. Recognizing all the parts of life that I’m blessed by.
As we head into a holiday weekend here in the US I encourage you to take the time to try this practice out. Stay in a state of thanksgiving and see what changes occur in your own personal world. See how your view becomes more positive, even if in the midst of any challenges.
