Monday musings–Welcome to 2020

It is the first Monday of a new year! Seems this first week has just brought so much joy already.  We enjoyed a kid free week; a rare event in our home with four kids between us.  Spending a week relaxing, rejuvenating and envisioning our plans for the future has been a rewarding experience.  It is always nice when you are given things and moments you didn’t even know you needed.

Having a mellow start to the new year has set us up well I think.  Sometimes one needs to take some down time to regroup and reset.  The planning and thinking about the year ahead has always been my favorite part of the new years holiday.  In years past I have created a big list of lots of goals to accomplish through out the year.  And it has been hit and miss as to what I accomplish each year.  So with this new year and new decade I thought I would try a new approach.  I want to focus more on intention versus resolution.

In making the switch from one way of thinking, let me first define these words.

Resolution: (n): a firm decision to do or not to do something.

Intention: (n): a thing intended; an aim or plan.

In the past few years I have been learning about mindset and how the words we speak out loud and in our minds affect our outcomes.  Anyone of us can find statistics on how many people fail at their new years resolutions.  I think I read this morning something like 46% of folks succeed.  Not too promising or inspiring to think about the other 54% failing or falling short.

Having just completed a rather difficult (for me) ending to this past decade and looking back over this past year, I decided I did not want to repeat the same mistakes and fall short of my goals.  So I have decided to be part of some different workshops, groups and forums that will help me succeed in changing how I set goals.  Moving from a resolution mindset to an intentional way of thinking and behaving.

Resolutions are not bad and can be very motivating.  I have had success with setting them before and may again someday.  But this year, I want to focus more on how I think and how that impacts the decisions I make and the actions I follow through with.  Setting my intention each day to take an action toward some goal is more my style this year.

For example; one of my goals this year is to be more active.  Instead of saying or writing on the never ending list on my fridge that I want to run everyday, (which I know I ahead of time I most likely will not do as I have not ran much in the last year) I have set the goal that every week I will add in a new physical activity that will help me become more fit.

My plan for this looks like this so far: 
Work week 1–do 50 squats everyday (completed!) I started last week since this lined up with my current work schedule.
Work week 2 (this started today) – 60 squats everyday and walk 10,000 steps each day.

Each week I plan to add another activity to the mix till I am seeing the results I desire to see.   I am already finding this fun and creative and a way to keep me from feeling overwhelmed with changing too many things all at once.  So far this is easy to do and I am excited to add a new activity each week.  And to see how this shift in my thinking will affect my results.  I can tell you so far, I am having no stress about being more active because I know I can add one thing each week.

How do you approach the new year?  Do you set goals each January?  And do you successfully meet them? Or are you like me this year and try to set more intentions; believing this kindness to oneself may serve you better?  I am hopeful that trying a new style of goal setting and planning will be successful, it’s worth a shot right?!

Monday Musings–let the sun rise

I am an early riser as you can probably tell by most of my posts.  I enjoy the quiet each day before the world I orbit in with my partner, kids and dog are all awake.  I love to start each day with reading, meditating and my cup of coffee.  Starting the day from a place of calmness almost always sets me up to stay calmer and more centered through out the day.

When I started into work this morning, even though it was still dark out, I could not help but think about the sunrise.  There is something about experiencing the wonderful, beautiful masterpiece that the sky awakening brings that brightens my morning and reminds that each day is new and to be grateful.  Each day we have the opportunity to be better than the one before.

As this is the first week of the new year at my job, I am overjoyed to start anew and see what this coming year brings.  I love beginnings; there is an excitement that comes with starting fresh!  Thinking and dreaming about all the possibilities of the next 365 days makes me almost giddy with anticipation for Wednesday!

I am hopeful as I launch into this year with many new ideas and plans. I am anticipating seeing more sunrises.  Of being more present to appreciate each one as a reminder of the beauty in this world and that no matter how dark the night, the sun will rise.

What does the sunrise bring to mind for you? I hope it will help you focus and remember we have another new day to be thankful for.  That we are ALL connected through this one action in the sky each morning and evening; as there is always a sunrise and sunset somewhere.  I can’t help but think how wonderful that is to know; that we each get a new beginning every single day and with glorious colors!

Sunday reflections (31) – final review

On this last Sunday of the year I’m thinking about all the things this year brought. Looking back through my posts and seeing where I grew and where I have more work to do. Sharing my thoughts, ideas and details of my life is a rewarding, cathartic and interesting activity for me to partake in. Writing a blog gives me an outlet to feel “published” and share thoughts with even just one who may feel empowered and encouraged. Seeing readers throughout the world is always amazing to me. I love seeing a new reader in a new country.

As I’m reviewing this blog today, I can see that I was not as consistent with writing every single Sunday as I was hoping I would be. I may have been somewhat repetitive in my posts. And I need to become more focused on what I want this blog to be.

With one year ending and a new one beginning I’m excited to set new intentions for Wordy Chick. To create a better viewing experience and better content. My original intent with this blog was to share my experiences moving through a relationship with a narcissist. It helped me to share what I was learning and hoping that maybe my experiences could help someone else as I was recovering and rebuilding my life. As my life has moved forward and far away from that moment, I’ve tried to move this blog away from that topic to more of a best self/life blog.

In evaluating today I think I’ve done that. Although the posts about recovering and moving on from a narcissist are still the most read posts, my hope for this new year is to continue to contribute new ideas about how to live your best life. This new year I plan to focus more on lists and ways to practically implement ideas to help cultivate the life you desire.

My hope is to encourage you more often. To share more of myself and learn to write better. Only by continually growing do we evolve into better. I have enjoyed watching the blogs I read and follow grow and become better. Perhaps this year you might even start a blog; knowing we each have something amazing to offer this world I encourage you to do so. You might have something important to share!

I hope you enjoy this last week of 2019. I hope you set new intentions for the new year not just a resolution that might easily be tossed aside. I look forward to sharing more of this amazing life with you.

Wordy girl Wednesday (6) -Are you a morning person or not?

Good morning to you all.   It is early here in the Pacific Northwest.  Fall is definitely in full swing here with the weather much colder this week, the trees changing colors and everyone wearing their coats.  It is a beautiful time of the year, fall is my favorite season.  I love to see the trees in full colors of orange, red and yellow.   I have a few tree lined streets I love to drive down, just to see how magnificent they are.

When the season changes, I tend to evaluate where I am at.  At least every few months, I am busy checking in with my goals and dreams and seeing what progress if any I have made.  And today I was a bit startled to realize that I am not anywhere near where I desire to be.  Now this isn’t a surprise really, but I think the fact that we are now into October and my personal achievements do not look much different than they did in March, was a disappointment. And it has me thinking about the culprits; the reasons for this. And I realized that one of the them has to do with how I begin each day.

How do you start your days?  Are you a jump out of bed, ready to tackle the day kind of person?  Are you happy and excited for the day?  Or do you hit the snooze and drag yourself out of bed, with dread, worried about what the day will bring?   I like to think I am the kind that bounces out of bed, eager to see what the day will bring.  I would call myself a “morning person” as I am the most productive and creative at this time of day.  I tend to feel I am at my best early in the morning.

For a long time now I have awoken early; now that I am no longer working a night shift, I am definitely more rested and feel ready to greet the day.  My usual state is to be excited for a new day.  It is a new opportunity each day to make it better than the day before.   And I love new challenges, ideas, beginnings, etc.  I love setting goals, making lists, marking things off and seeing progress.  But lately I have been struggling with some things and I can see the evidence by my lack of personal achievement.

I am still that early riser, 5am comes quick.  But I find I hit the snooze lately rather then just putting my feet on the floor.  I have not been meditating or stretching.  I can’t recall the last time I wrote in my journal or made a list of tasks for the day. When I don’t rise quick, when I delay and lay in bed, hoping for more sleep I do not start with the most positive mindset.  And I find this is creating a cycle that is impacting my motivation and attitude.  This one tiny thing for some folks, has the power to derail the whole day.

So today I am contemplating how can I get back to that positive attitude I was having.  How can I be excited to get up and start a new day again?  When I embrace the day with joy and excitement I tend to be more patient, receptive, creative and productive.  As I have many ideas and goals that I want to accomplish, I need to get back to this way of living. 

How do start your day?  Do you have a full proof plan that helps you?  Do you set the alarm across the room which requires you to get out of bed to turn it off?  How hot or cold is your room? Is it conducive to staying under the covers or one that is easy to get up?

Here are a few ideas of how to become more of a morning person:

  • Set the temperature to a level that you are comfortable to sleep in (colder is best they say) but have that heat kick on a bit before the alarm goes off so your room is comfortable to get out of the covers.
  • Make a list the night before of the tasks that are needed to be done the next day.  I am not very good at this, but plan to do this tonight. (I will let you all know in a month or so how this goes for me; if it really helps.)
  • Read something inspiring before closing your eyes.  Feed your brain positive, good things before sleeping.   My belief is this helps create happy thoughts and dreams during the night.
  • Stretch before getting out of bed.  When the alarm goes off, do not hit snooze but do take a moment to stretch; arms far above your head and legs as far as they will reach.  Really feel your body.   When I was recovering from back surgery, I was advised to do some yoga moves before getting up, Cat and Cow, Child’s Pose.   All are a good way to help you wake up.
  • Wash your face with some cold water and drink a glass of water.  I find this helps to wake me up and jump start my brain to work.  I do this Before my first cup of coffee.
  • Read, meditate, journal.   I will be getting back to following the SAVERS (thank you Hal Elrod) plan as I have seen this work.  Have a step by step routine that you follow that gives you direction and focus.

When you have a plan to follow in the morning, be it any of these above or your own created routine, you will be more productive than just laying around.  If it is important to you to be someone who embraces each new day and desires to start the day feeling refreshed and renewed and positive, try some of these things.  Or let me know what you do to start each day ready for living your best life. New again?!

The end of the second week in a new role is leaving me exhausted.  Adjustments always take a moment and getting back to the type of shift I enjoy; a bit older than the last time is knocking me off my feet a bit.

But as I was scrolling around looking at quotes, I thought this was a good one for today.    Sometimes finding a great fit for your strengths and skills can take time.  I can say that I think I have found a great fit for me in this position.

If you are working to create your best life, keep looking at the ways in which you earn an income.  Make what you do; your job, be something you enjoy (at least most of the time).  Even if you have to learn something new, use that as a challenge for yourself.  Don’t be afraid of the new or unknown.  Sometimes taking a calculated risk truly does pay off.

I am someone who likes to be challenged.  To learn something new.  I am often easily distracted and enjoy change.  So once again, I am not living to work, but am enjoying the work I do.

And by the way; blogging is one of the things that makes me happy so I will continue to post.  To encourage you to live each day to the fullest.  To cheer you on in pursuing your goals, dreams and best life.  Today!  Everyday!
