I am still here! 200 posts later, what’s new to say?

Hello there!  How are you all doing?  I know it has been a few months since I last posted btu after seeing that I hit 200 posts, I was not sure I had more to say.   But really we all have something to say and more to share so here I am again.  Thank you to all that have remained reading.

How are you all doing these days?  Hoe are your fairing during this pandemic?  We are still in “phase 1” here where we live.  We are venturing out more and seeing more friends and family but things are definitely not “normal.”   We all spent months wondering when we could return to the way of life that we knew, but it seems that will not occur.  So we have to pivot and learn a new way to live, function and interact within this world.

What are you doing to deal with the changes in your world? Is your city still in lockdown or were you barely affected?   Are you working from home now or have children at home instead of school or daycare?  Are you facing job loss or a new position?

So many of us have had our worlds and homes rocked by the pandemic that we have had no choice but to change how we operate.  We have had to make daily modifications and learn how to handle changes that we neither wanted nor were prepared for.  Cause who can really prepare for a worldwide pandemic?!

Change is something so constant that I feel I have learned to embrace it.  I love variety and trying new things.  I am committed to not letting fear in any way dictate my life, so change is often exciting to me.  BUT I have found that I embrace the changes I am in control of.  Like most, I am still not a fan of the things out of my control.  Does it cause you stress to think you will have to permanently change your way of life? Or is that somewhat exciting and full of possibility?

I have learned these past few months how important mindset truly is.  Not only for our own mental state but for how we handle change. Especially unwelcome or unwanted change. Our human nature resists change that we do not control, face it we barely handle the changes we do want.  Like when we think we want a new job but then are stressed that we have to learn something new.  Or we are excited to move to a new town but find it painful and lonely when we get there.

So how do we handle the changes we do not desire to deal with?  Here are some ways we have handled the pandemic and all the changes that has meant for our household.

  1. We extend grace more easily.  I think this may be the number one key to dealing with others in the midst of unexpected challenges; extend grace. Let your people feel what they feel without trying to stop it and just let the moment be. 
  2. Allow alone time when needed.   With everyone at home much more than we used to be; we have had to find ways to get time alone and away from each other sometimes.  This may be taking a walk or being in our rooms with the door shut for a bit.   Even just taking a drive to get out of the house has helped.
  3.  Finding new activities for us all to participate in.  We put together puzzles.  We watch a show or a movie together.  We have played games.  Taking the time to better enjoy each other has helped us have a more positive experience. 
  4. Looking at this moment in time as an opportunity rather than a disappointment.  The first couple of months were tough.  It was tough to adjust to not really seeing anyone other than the folks you live with.  But we have tried to embrace the time this has brought with our children.  As we have had another one leave the nest (there are 4 total and time is moving too fast) in many ways this has been an added bonus. 
  5.  Trying to keep life as normal as possible.  Keeping a routine.  Having dinner together.  Chores. All the things we usually do each day or week we have continued.  We still get dressed and showered before working from home.  We still make the beds and cook meals.  

Life may not look the same anymore but we have a choice in how we view that.  To live our best life we sometimes have to face moments where we need to pivot.  To learn new ways and do things differently.  If your mindset is to see moments of stress and change as an opportunity then you can’t help but be successful.  In the past few months of this pandemic we are more successful as a couple and family than before.    Life is still full of abundance.

Monday motivations–getting started

Thinking about how to stay on track with goals and dreams had me thinking this past weekend that maybe it’s time for a new series. I enjoyed posting a new vocabulary word last year and just always like the idea of having a specific topic to write about in a series type format.

So with that idea in mind and wanting to keep this blog continuing forward with more self care and best life tips; I’m kicking off motivation Mondays. This is where I might post a quote, a story, a list or anything I think may be of value to anyone that might need some motivation to continue to pursue your best life and tackle your goals and dreams. I know I can often use the extra push in my daily pursuit to be better than the day before.

So today, let’s kick things off! I have a list of dreams that I am dedicated to achieving in this next decade and I can use to stay on track. So today let’t start with a quote that is motivating to me; perhaps it will be for you as well.

This is where it starts! What are you thinking on? What are you hoping and planning to achieve this year? This decade? It’s starts with belief! It’s a choice of believe it’s possible. A choice to take action.

So today think about your dreams. Think on what you want for your life. Start with your thoughts. Dream about what’s possible.

Monday Musings–Do you struggle with staying committed to goals?

I didn’t want to get out of bed this morning.  I was not feeling that 430 am wake up alarm!  My first thought was “not already!”  There just did not seem to be enough down time this weekend.  Too many activities, hours in the car and late nights, I was not feeling as rested heading into a Monday morning as I prefer.  And to top if off, the team I wanted to win the Super Bowl lost (this is an American football tradition for those not familiar).  To say the least I was less than excited to the day.

But I got up anyway! See I committed to making my health a priority this year.  I decided to be active Every Single Day.  Not when it was convenient.  Not only when I want to or feel like it.  I made a deliberate commitment to myself.  So even on mornings I do not want to workout.  Or the mornings I do not want to get out of bed.  I do not always want to read or journal.  BUT, I always feel better once I follow through on that commitment. I always feel accomplished when I see those minutes rack up on my Fit Bit.  Or when I see the string of entries without any missed days.

Commitment is tough at times. It requires sacrifice often.  Today it was a struggle to not just be lazy and fall back to sleep on the sofa.  And once I completed that workout and the rest of my morning rituals, the better I felt about facing the day.  I had more energy. I was in a more positive frame of mind.

What commitments have you made to yourself this year?  How are you working on them after the first month of the new year?  Did you set a resolution without a plan for follow through?  I think many of us know that if we “fail to plan our plans will fail“~Churchill quote.

Because this commitment to my health is my number one priority this year; I made a plan to execute.  Here is what I do daily:

  1. Get up between 430-500 am.  This took some gradual adjustment.  I was already getting up consistently at 5, so each work day in January I moved the alarm back by 5-10 minutes.  Now waking up at 430 is not that challenging.  But I do head to sleep between 9-10 pm.  Sleep is vital to health and knowing your optimum amount of rest needed will help you if waking up early is a goal.
  2. Be active every day.  I started the first week with a set amount of squats each day for a week.  Then I added in walking a specific amount of steps.  Then push-ups.  Now at 6 weeks into the new year, I am up to about 20-25 minutes each day, lots of weight training activities and 8-10K steps per day.  This was a change from setting a weight loss goal, this was about being intentional with activity every day.
  3. Read and journal every day.  I have done both of these for the past couple of years.  Reading has always been something I love so this is pretty easy of a commitment.  Writing everyday is a bit tougher to follow through on.  But I want to see the progress.  I want to see the string of dates without a break.  So after my daily workout, I read and write.
  4. I write my goals (5 of them) everyday.  The main one I am focusing on, I write multiple times a day.  I am thinking about that one thing all day, everyday.  I am  jotting down what I want to do each week to work toward that goal.

Keeping our commitments to ourselves seems really easy to give up on.  Making changes is tough! For some reason, it seems easier to keep when we make a commitment to someone else.  But you are just as important!  In fact if you don’t make yourself a priority you do not have as much to give to anyone else.

So this month, renew (or keep going) your focus to keeping those promises you make to yourself.  Make a plan.  Write it down.  And mark it off when you complete those tasks.  You are not alone! Keep going. Even on those Monday mornings when you want to sleep in, just keep at it!

Monday Musings – dreaming

Happy Monday everyone! I am one of those folks that do not mind Mondays so much. I’m sure I would enjoy them more if I was working for myself and didn’t have to be out the door by 630am. But still, it’s the beginning of a new week! Anything is possible.

I have old songs running through my head today.  One line; “I’ve always been a dreamer” by the Eagles is playing in my mind today. I am busy dreaming today. Dreaming of all the plans I have for this year and decade ahead.  Now I am a realist as much as a dreamer so I know that many things may not come true, but I am a believer in the saying “shoot for the moon and even if you miss you will land among the stars.”  So one of my motto’s is “why not try?!”

Whether you are starting a new year, new business, new relationship, new job, etc; there are always things you can do to set yourself up for the most success in these ventures.  And that is what we all want right, to be successful in whatever we are attempting to build, grow or change in our lives?

So what do you to to ensure that success?  As this new week starts, I have set my plan for how to tackle at least a few or my goals.  One week at a time is my focus this year.  As I talked about in last weeks post, rather than set a whole bunch of abstract goals that are not very clearly defined, I want to try something new this year.

I thought I would share how I am working on goals and dreams this year.

  • Asking myself new questions.  Such as where do I want to be at the end of this year?  What do I want my body to look like?  My bank account?  My relationships?  Career? Business?   You can apply these questions to your own world and what your priorities currently are.
  • Focusing on one major goal at a time.  For me one dream that I have had for years is to finish writing a book.  So each week I plan to write a chapter or two.  By giving myself one task to do for this goal,  I am breaking it down so it does not seem so overwhelming.  I am not trying to eat the whole elephant in one sitting.
  • Another goal is to be more active.  I could have set the goal to lose a specific amount of weight and although that may be in my mind, I am not focusing on that.  Instead I am just staying committed to moving more.  To being active every single day.  By setting that as my daily plan and not stressing about the scale or what I am eating, I have freed myself to perhaps actually lose some weight.
  • Listening and reading about others dreams and goals. Hearing stories of achievement and success is inspiring and keeps dreaming alive. I love to hear what other people have achieved and how they did so.  It motivates me to keep trying, especially on the days when I do not feel like putting in the effort.
  • Rest!  Take time to rest your mind and body.  Try to go to bed at a time that is conducive to the time you want to wake up.  Knowing how much sleep you need to feel rested and re-energized is important.  If we are too tired, we are less inclined to get any tasks completed let alone the ones that encourage our dreams.

These are just a few things I am working on this year.  A few ways I am changing how I plan and work towards my dreams.  I have many more that I am often thinking about and imagine I will share about as they begin to emerge through my daily and weekly commitments to bringing them into reality.

Wordy Girl Wednesday– mood changers

It’s a cold dreary day here in the Northwest.  I am definitely thankful I work inside. Days like today are tough to be working all day outside; I commend those that can.  Just like the grey sky; my mood has been a bit grey the past few days.  Some of my mood is due to life stresses that we all experience from time to time.  But some of it is that I am just cranky.  Sometimes we are all that way; when we wished we had just stayed in bed and not had to do anything.  But like many of you, I have a family and a job so I have to pull myself out of bed and get on with it.  This week has been a challenge in wanting to do that.

In recognizing that I need to change my attitude I thought I would share with you what I have been doing this week to work on that.

Here are a few tips I try:

  1. I tend to chat by text with my partner.  He is a great listener and just lets me be.  If I am spun up over something kind of silly and inconsequential, he just reads it and says he is there for me.   This kind of support is often enough to make me feel heard and calmer.
  2. I take a walk. Sometimes this can be hard to do during a busy day but I think it is vital especially when trying to not vent all your frustrations to your coworkers.  Just take 10 min and walk around the building.  Go get some water. Sometimes the quick walk just clears my head enough for me to feel I can go back to my desk more focused.
  3. Listen to music.  Or a podcast.  Or an audio book.  Sometimes when I am having a not so good day, I will just put on my headset, find some music I like and allow the music to soothe me some.  Or I will listen to podcasts from different blogs I follow.  Having to concentrate a bit on what they are speaking about can be enough to change my thoughts. Gives me something else to focus on.

These are things I’ve been trying this week as my attitude has been a bit gloomy and grumpy like our weather. Changing your thoughts is work. Staying positive sometimes requires some extra effort. But it’s always worth it. No one really wants to be around someone who is crabbing at them, especially when our bad mood isn’t anyone else’s fault. We are responsible for our own thoughts and actions.

It is not always easy to pull yourself out of a bad mood.  What do you try?
